Introduction to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy: Reading and Instigating Psychological Flexibility ProcessesZoom Webinar, CE: 6 Hours Workshop Description: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) turns the usual approach to emotional pain on its head, giving up the quest for symptom reduction for the richer purpose of building a meaningful life. This workshop will introduce the ACT core processes of psychological flexibility, how to "read" these processes, and how to change them in yourself and your clients. You will experience ACT exercises and be encouraged to practice ACT on yourself. The workshop will address the effectiveness of ACT in enhancing well-being in people with a wide array of presenting problems and from diverse backgrounds. This workshop will be helpful for beginning ACT practitioners and for anyone looking to increase your own and your clients' psychological flexibility. (Introductory) Learning Objectives: 1. Describe the theoretical and empirical bases for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy 2. Describe the six processes of psychological flexibility 3. Assess client psychological flexibility by "reading" these processes as they are occurring in the therapy room. 4. Explain the role of the therapeutic relationship in ACT. 5. Explain strategies for increasing acceptance and present moment awareness in oneself and one's clients 6. Apply strategies for handling unwanted thoughts. 7. Describe strategies for increasing a coherent and flexible sense of self. 8. Apply exercises for increasing awareness of values and consistent action the direction of values About the Presenter: Amy House, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist and a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry & Health Behavior at Augusta University and director of the Augusta DBT program. Her primary areas of expertise are in mindfulness and acceptance approaches to the treatment of severe emotion dysregulation, suicidality, and traumatic stress. She also has a passion for training and supervising others in evidence-based psychotherapy, especially Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). She has had intensive training and supervision in ACT and has facilitated an ACT peer consultation group for the past 12 years. She is an experienced educator and has led several introductory ACT workshops.
