Who We Are and What We Do

The Georgia Psychological Association represents psychology in the State of Georgia (over 1,100 members) and is recognized at the national level for its activism and breadth of activity.  Besides sponsoring a variety of Continuing Education workshops culminating in the Spring Annual Meeting and publishing the Georgia Psychologist, GPA is constantly acting to expand the parameters of psychology in our State and to increase the quality of service to the communities in which psychologists live and work.   Our growing number of dedicated volunteers work on Committees and Boards which are the heart and soul of GPA.  Some of our recent activities include:

Referral Services  
  • The public can select their own psychologists on our Website Referral Service.
    Approximately 1,000 consumers visit our website monthly for referrals.
Continuing Education
  • Presents varied workshops. We strive to bring in nationally known presenters, as well as, small interactive workshops, especially on specific ethical and risk management issues.
 
Legal/Legislative
  • Advocates at State level with insurance regulators & administrators
  • Advocates in the Legislature on mental health parity, patient protection
  • Advocates at the Federal level on patient protection, confidentiality and mental health parity
  • Addresses issues of psychological testing & psychologist's hospital practice
  • Helps maintain current joint custody laws
Visibility
  • Provides professional lobbying presence at the State Legislature and development of close working relationships with key legislators and administrators
  • Circulates press releases/Interviews with newspapers, television and magazines
  • Promotes Referral Services through Yellow Page website advertising.
Community Service
  • Implements APA's annual Public Education Campaigns
  • Organizes Mind/Body Connection, Resilience and Warning Signs anti-violence forums throughout the State
  • Developed Disaster Response Team recognized by the American Red Cross. The DRT provided probono crisis interventions during the Hurricane Katrina, the Olympics and Atlanta bombing incidents

All this is possible because of the help of our members both in the form of dues and in your direct participation as a volunteer.
